I recently got to sit down with Miller Genuine Draft and Complex to chat about BALLER STYLE! (A.k.a basketball players’ off-court style.) We sat around the table with a cold one (4x cold filtered and smoooooth af, FYI) and got into it about some of the OG style Gods / Founding Fathers of the Game (good old MJ!) – who brought what to the table and who’s really doing it today.
We, of course, got into the current situation of basketball fashion icons today – talking about some new wave peeps like Swaggy P & my fav, Russel Westbrook…boys who def have some exceptionally smooth style.
Building on that, this world is not JUST a boy’s game. After all this I really started to analyze how deeply intertwined fashion + basketball have become & their impact on the general fashion symbiosis – for both men and women. Can we take in that Michael Jordan literally invented ‘athleisure’ (a.k.a the acceptable wearing of tracksuits in public)??? Yes, the OG’s (men) have pushed this fashion culture forward, but women have, over time, adopted a unique viewpoint on it.
Look at Aleali May – the first woman to release a collaboration with Jordan available for both men AND women. These days, you’re just as (if not more) likely to see a girl in sneakers rather than heels. Personally, tracksuits, sneakers, varsity jackets take up a large part of my own wardrobe – I can say they’ve become essentials of most female closet’s today. They’re not just a ‘subculture’ – we’ve adopted them as classics, and I’m all for it.
As an ode to this all…I had to do an outfit including my vintage Bulls jersey + Jordans.
